New avian flu outbreak detected on a farm in the Urgell region (Catalonia)

The Government of Catalonia has confirmed the detection of a new case of avian influenza on a poultry farm located within the surveillance radius previously established after the first confirmed outbreak in the Urgell area (Lleida).

The infected farm is approximately 3 km from the initial focus of infection, and the case was identified through preventive testing carried out on all farms in the control zone. As a result of the finding, the 9,000 birds on the farm will be culled immediately according to current sanitary protocols in order to control and eradicate the outbreak. In response to the new case, Catalan authorities have expanded the surveillance radius to 10 km around the affected farm, which now includes additional municipalities and farms within the controlled area.

All relevant biosecurity measures — including cleaning, disinfection, and strengthened veterinary inspections — have been activated. Coordination with the Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital has also begun to conduct preventive health monitoring of farm workers within the surveillance zones.

Catalan authorities emphasize that the consumption of poultry meat and eggs does not pose a risk to human health.
