#NoBirdFlu campaign launches to boost farm biosecurity across Europe

With the arrival of the migratory season and the heightened risk of avian influenza, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission have unveiled a new communication initiative aimed at reinforcing farm biosecurity. The campaign, branded #NoBirdFlu, provides farmers, veterinarians, and anyone interacting with poultry farms with practical tools to reduce the risk of outbreaks.

A proactive step to protect poultry and people
The #NoBirdFlu toolkit is designed especially for small and medium-sized farms, where everyday precautions can make a decisive difference. It emphasizes simple but effective measures to protect flocks, safeguard public health, and avoid the costly trade disruptions that typically follow avian influenza outbreaks.

Nikolaus Kriz, EFSA’s Executive Director, underlined the importance of prevention: “The launch of #NoBirdFlu highlights how preparedness today can prevent crises tomorrow. By working together we can protect our animals, secure food systems and build resilience against future health threats.”

Claire Bury, Deputy Director General for Food Sustainability at the European Commission, echoed this message: “With winter approaching, and the threat of avian influenza rising, everyone must play their part in preventing new outbreaks. From farmers, workers and small flock holders, to vets and farm visitors, simple precautions can make a real difference.”

What the toolkit offers
The communication package includes:

  • An infographic with guidance on hygiene, protective equipment, and movement control.

  • Posters to serve as daily visual reminders for workers and visitors.

  • Ready-to-use stickers and social media content to spread awareness within farming communities and beyond.

These resources are available in all EU languages, ensuring broad accessibility across Member States.

Why now?
Avian influenza outbreaks tend to surge in Europe during the colder months, when migratory birds travel and gather across the continent. In recent years, the disease has caused devastating losses to poultry farms, disrupted supply chains, and affected livelihoods. By engaging not only farmers but also suppliers, workers, and visitors, EFSA and the Commission hope to strengthen the chain of protection at every point of contact with poultry.

Looking ahead
The European Commission has also tasked EFSA with assessing how farmers, veterinarians, and workers perceive the risk of avian influenza. The results will shape future awareness campaigns and contribute to an EU-wide preparedness initiative planned for 2026.

How to get involved
Farmers and industry stakeholders are encouraged to download and share the toolkit, integrating its messages into daily operations and communications. By adopting and promoting the #NoBirdFlu principles, Europe’s poultry sector can take a united stand against the spread of avian influenza and reinforce the resilience of its farms.
