Indonesia eyes China and the Middle East for poultry exports

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono

Indonesia is continuing to explore export opportunities for poultry products in China and the Middle East, aiming to broaden market access, absorb domestic surplus, and support poultry farmers’ incomes. Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono said the government is pursuing export expansion as part of efforts to strengthen the poultry sector and respond to growing global food demand.

The effort is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Indonesia’s poultry sector, which has already begun shipping products to overseas markets. In March 2026, the Agriculture Ministry dispatched 545 tons of poultry and poultry products to Singapore, Japan, and Timor-Leste, with a reported value of Rp18.2 billion.

Target markets and policy goals

According to the reports, China and the Middle East are being treated as priority destinations for Indonesian poultry exports because they offer significant market potential and could help ease pressure from domestic oversupply. The government sees export expansion as a way to create additional demand for domestic poultry production.

China is especially important because of its scale and demand for animal protein, while Middle Eastern markets remain attractive as the government looks to diversify export destinations. At the same time, the available evidence shows that Indonesia’s export base is still developing, with current shipments remaining modest in volume.

A sector in expansion

The export push follows other government initiatives aimed at supporting the agricultural sector and research-based innovation. ANTARA has also reported that the Agriculture Ministry and BRIN have strengthened cooperation on agricultural research and innovation to support food security and downstream development.

For poultry producers, access to new markets could help stabilize domestic prices and improve farm profitability over time. In the longer term, exports to China and the Middle East may become an important pillar of Indonesia’s international poultry growth strategy, although the market-opening process is still underway.
